Gizmo Guy and I have never been big on celebrating Valentine’s Day. GG often brings me home little things he’s picked up because he thought I might like them, or it might solve some issue I’ve been having, so to me, every day is Valentine’s Day. Well, maybe not every day, but we don’t wait for a special day to tell us we should say “I love you” to each other. (Although I have been dropping lots of very unsubtle hints like “I like flowers, you know.” Which is generally followed by “Just don’t buy them on Valentine’s Day. The prices are insane then. Wait until Wednesday.”)

To show you how much I love all of you who have followed my blog over from Blogspot, as well as to celebrate my new website design, I’m holding a contest.Β  I’m giving a $20 gift certificate to one lucky commenter. All you have to do is leave a comment below telling me if you celebrate Valentine’s Day, and if you do, what was the best present you ever received. Or the worst. Or what you’d like to receive. Or give. Books? Chocolate? Flowers? Diamonds? Just tell me something other than “enter me”. (The winner will be chosen by

I’ll leave the post open for a week — so make sure you comment before 9 pm Eastern Time, Sunday, February 20th. I’ll announce the winner next Monday morning.

The first Valentine’s Day my hubby and I were together he sent me the traditional long-stemmed red roses. He had them delivered to my office several days early because Valentine’s Day was on Friday…I had to walk down a long corridor with this enormous vase, past every single consultant’s office on the floor! It was hysterical…and apparently shamed a couple of them into ordering flowers for their significant others.

We’ve been married over 12 years and he still brings me flowers on Valentine’s Day. He also brings them for our daughter. I think that means more than the bouquet he brings me!

I like the flowers more than chocolates, jewelry or anything else.

My favorite Valentine’s Day was when I had been at a new job only a few weeks. I was the office assistant, and part of my job was to circulate around the entire office to pick up/drop off paperwork, etc. I walked up to my desk and there was a rose waiting for me. As I walked around the office, I found out that every single female in the office had gotten a rose on her desk. They were from the head tech/computer guy, which astonished me. In the few days I’d know him, he was a gruff and grumpy person. But he was apparently a marshmallow inside. πŸ™‚

I don’t celebrate:( One of the joys of being single!

  • February 14, 2011 at 8:40 am

I don’t normally celebrate since most of the time I am single and even when I am not it seems to be ignored. Plus I got dumped last night (sunday night) so this day really sucks for me. I did make all 5 of my nieces and nephews little goody bags and my co-worker and I celebrate anti-valentines day by getting each other cards bashing the holiday. Brings a smile to our faces, and is fun that way.

  • February 14, 2011 at 8:53 am

Oh Sheri! He dumped you this close to Valentine’s Day? That sucks! I like the idea of anti-valentines day cards…that’s a great way to deal with it.

  • February 14, 2011 at 9:09 am

Like you, we don’t celebrate V-Day because every day is equally special. The hubs is so sweet and good to me, I actually have to be careful NOT to mention things that catch my eye, otherwise he’d get them all. After twelve years together, I still think he’s incredible in every way–something I tell (or show) him every chance I get. πŸ™‚

    Happy Valentine’s Day!

  • February 14, 2011 at 9:09 am

Won’t be celebrating this year. My hubby passed in Dec. BUT my grandbabies made me a really cute card to cheer me up! Got to love them!

  • February 14, 2011 at 9:17 am

W don’t really celebrate in a big way. We send e-cards back and forth to each other all day, I make a nice dinner and sometimes we’ll get a little gift.

  • February 14, 2011 at 9:24 am

I am in the camp that everyday should be special and love it when my hubby will pick up a bouquet of tulips when he is out and about, or bring me home a Starbuck’s Mocha Frappacino, just because. We don’t go out to dinner on Valentine’s day anymore (we’ve been married eons, lol), but my hubby always surprises me with a home cooked meal. Then it is movie time snuggled on the couch with a bowl of popcorn. Low-key but still very special.

    Happy Valentine’s Day Leah

  • February 14, 2011 at 9:26 am

Unfortunately, my hubby is “anti-greeting card holidays” so the 14th of February is just like any other. But my kids always make sure to make me cards and that’s always the highlight of my day. πŸ™‚

    Love the new site, Leah!

  • February 14, 2011 at 9:34 am

I don’t love Valentine’s Day, probably because I’m single for it most of the time. As to gifts, I don’t like the obvious choices. I love tulips–hate roses. A large cinnamon dolce latte and a piece of cheesecake given to me by any guy will get me to be their Valentine too.

  • February 14, 2011 at 9:40 am

Jo – my condolences. So glad you’ve got your grandbabies remembering Valentine’s Day for you.

Joder – I’m not a big rose fan either. Lilies for me. Something fragrant, since there’s no color and no scent to anything at this time of year around here. And OMG yes, buy me a latte and cheesecake, and they’d definitely be my Valentine!

    Hi Leah,
    Happy Valentine’s Day everyone. πŸ™‚
I don’t celebrate anymore either but even if we aren’t celebrating with a mate it’s still about love. My kids always do something for the Holiday like buy me Books πŸ™‚ I love it and of course chocolate filled with raspberry.I wish everyone love and happiness today no matter where it comes from.

I don’t really celebrate Valentine’s Day, but today I decided to focus on myself and got back into my workout routine.

    • February 14, 2011 at 10:12 am

Leni – That’s something I need to do. I don’t think it’s something my hubby should suggest though, LOL πŸ˜‰

  • February 14, 2011 at 10:08 am

I do and Gave my wife a dozen chocolate covered cherries. Not boxed ones. Gourmet hand dipped threesomes with stems. And we are going on a lunch date to Red Lobster.

  • February 14, 2011 at 10:15 am

A few years ago my boyfriend surprised me. He ordered flowers and chocolate and had them delivered. Usually my bf doesn’t get me anything or if he does he doesn’t keep it a surprise. He’ll give it to me a week early or have me pick something out.

I’ve been separated for over 15 years, so I spend Valentine’s Day with my kids and buy them 1/2 pound of their favorite chocolates.

  • February 14, 2011 at 11:37 am

    Looks lovely over here.

Well, we don’t really celebrate Valentine’s Day as such. Hubby says everyday is Valentine’s Day, though I do get him his favourtie choccie and there are definitely more kisses throughout the day…lol!!!

It would blow me over if he presented me with a bunch of flowers, or chocolate or ever some bling!!!

I no longer celebrate Valentine’s Day. I haven’t since my husband passed away 5 years ago. I keep the memories of the ones we shared. We never had much, but he always made it special.

I sent roses to my mom. I got a gift, (bear) from hubby, and I gave him chocolate covered cherries, I do sent out evalentines cards, so yeah, I guess I do celebrate it. Thanks for the contest.

  • February 14, 2011 at 12:14 pm

I celebrate Valentine’s Day but my hubby really doesn’t’. I buy cards for everyone and boxes of candies for the children. I also decorate a little. I do get my better half a card but that’s all.

My husband has delegated Valentine’s Day to the Hallmark holiday catagory. He doesn’t do gift’s, dinner or rarely a card. He does do things for no reason whenever he feels like throughout the year. Just not on his Hallmark holidays.

  • February 14, 2011 at 12:30 pm

I’m baking hubby a peach pie for V’Day and gave him toast/peanutbutter and hot chocolate in bed.

    Please enter me and thanks.

  • February 14, 2011 at 12:46 pm

I don’t celebrate Valentine’s Day because I’m single, but when I was younger my mom used to buy me a Valentine’s Day present. I’m not sure why though. She said she just combined it with Chinese New Year. We (the “kids”) send my parents out to dinner on Valentine’s Day though.

  • February 14, 2011 at 12:46 pm

Happy Valentine’s Day. It’s not a real important day, but I do think we are expected to celebrate it when you have a significant other. Getting diamonds is nice, but I also appreciate the flowers and candy, too.

My fave Valentine Day’s has to be 2009. My hubby had always wanted to get me a larger diamond and decided to get it for me as a 24th Anniversary Gift (we had decided to get new bands for our 25th) and then he surprised me at Valentine’s Day by giving it to me early.

Hey Leah, Happy VDay to you and Gizmo Guy

We don’t celebrate VDay but today we all ended up getting something (which is an exception not a rule). Just happened to find some sales I couldn’t pass up for the boys and DH said….. well I found the boots so they are from me….

I had to make a trip to the States and found the cutest boots at Target….. LOve Them…. haven’t taken them off since I got home… LOL

  • February 14, 2011 at 2:24 pm

V Day is just another day at my house.

  • February 14, 2011 at 4:08 pm

We kind of celebrate. My husband will ask and ask what I want and I never want anything. Then, he will go buy me flowers anyway. I’d rather have a book. Oh well, I know he loves me.

For the past few years, I’ve celebrated with hundreds of people. They stop by my office, they call, the send packages and we have fun. On average, I have several thousand valentines come through my tiny post office in the town of Loveville, MD. We have a special cancelation that we use and I have fun. It’s busy and chaos and I have to world’s best customers. This year, a customer who drove over 50 miles to come to my office brought me heart lights to hang up in the office. How cool is that!

  • February 14, 2011 at 4:16 pm

The best present was a huge stuffed bear. Sounds so small, I know, but really, the bear was huge…. LOL, just joking πŸ˜‰ It really meant a lot.

  • February 14, 2011 at 5:19 pm

When my husband and I were dating we celebrated it all the time. Since we’ve been married 13 years and now have 3 kids we don’t celebrate. My husband says it’s a hallmark holiday and would rather spend the money on the kids.

  • February 14, 2011 at 6:13 pm

We do celebrate, but over the years it’s become less and less important. Back when we were in college (not saying how long ago that was), I got a new leather jacket. That was an awesome gift. But the very best year was the year that he wrote & recorded a song for me. *sniff*

Congrats on the new site and happy valentine’s day!!

  • February 14, 2011 at 7:13 pm

This year we went to see th UCONN women play basketball. they beat Oklahoma. I lvoe watching Maya Moore play. My hubby gave me a charm for my Pandora bracelet.

  • February 14, 2011 at 11:09 pm

We don’t really celebrate it at all. My partner will usually pick some rose’s and decorate the bedroom.

  • February 15, 2011 at 12:09 am

I spend v-day alone with a book and a box of chocolate. Good luck everyone!

  • February 15, 2011 at 10:31 am

I don’t celebrate Valentine’s Day.I never have, even when there was a special guy in my life. Like you said I’d want everyday to be like VDay.

  • February 16, 2011 at 10:03 am

I love your website. We do celebrate Valentine’s day. My husband likes to surprise me every year. The best present I have ever gotten was diamond earrings.

  • February 17, 2011 at 1:04 pm

    Hey Leah,

New blog looks great the bleed through to the black is a little distracting though.

We celebrate Valentine’s Day but it’s usually by going to dinner somewhere nice. We don’t really get each other gifts or anything. We have in the past and he’s even sent me roses once.

Bought daughter and granddaughter small gifts and then we cooked steak on the grill with all the fixings and had a family dinner with chocolate covered strawberries for dessert.

  • February 18, 2011 at 12:50 am

I wish I was organized enough to celebrate but all I could manage was a wreath by the door this year. My good friend got me chocolate which I always enjoy.

  • February 18, 2011 at 8:24 pm

I don’t celebrate it. I’ve been given flowers once. White When I asked about the white instead of red. He said.. ‘I’m Italian, I’ll bring you red when you’re dead’..Okay.
No that one didn’t last long at all. Would rather have gotten Day Lillies. Wouldn’t mind roses except my favorite are ‘sterling silver’I doubt they could be found at a florest. I basically treat it like birthdays etc. It’s just another day.
The site redo turned out great Leah.
Thanks for offering us all a chance at a VD present : )
