I can finally talk about the “sekrit project” I’ve been hinting at for the past couple months.  Back in February I was invited by Angela James, the executive editor at Carina Press, to be part of this year’s Christmas Anthology — specifically an erotic anthology with two other authors. Yes, “invited”.  As in I didn’t have to submit an already-written story as part of a contest or competition. Heck, I didn’t even have to write any pages because Angela said, and I quote, “I know you can write. 🙂 ” Talk about a stroke to the ego.

Of course I still had to come up with a synopsis that met with Angela’s approval. Which I did.

Given free rein as to the subject and genre, I stayed with my favorite — contemporary — but instead of writing a tie-in to any of my other stories, I gave in to my secret desire to always write a story set right in my own backyard. If you’ve followed me on Pinterest, you may have seen I have a board called “Research for Future Books” that may give you some ideas of some of the characters and places I’m writing about. (I’ll be talking more about some of the local influences, and how to keep it Canadian without spiraling into stereotypes as the release date approach. But you know what they say about stereotypes, right? That they exist because they’re based on reality?)

Now the contract is signed and winging its way through the Canada Post back to Harlequin headquarters and I’ve got Angela’s go ahead to talk about it, so…

Here’s a very rough blurb — I suck at writing blurbs — it will be cleaned up by Carina’s blurb-writing wizards, trust me!

The Art of Love

Being a Mountie with the RCMP has been KAYLEY SULLIVAN’s dream all her life. But spending the past five Christmases on duty in the great white north has frozen the last of the holiday spirit right out of her soul. The chance at a new position in Southern Ontario has brought her back to the love of her life, Ryan Porter. Being back in Ryan’s arms makes Kayley aware of the one part of her life she’s neglected. Now she’s worried that if she doesn’t get this transfer she’ll be forced to set Ryan free from their long-distance relationship. But there is one present she can give Ryan to make all their dreams come true…

Artist and sculptor RYAN PORTER has been in love with Kayley since college, but his father’s death forced him to abandoned his dreams of marrying RCMP-bound Kayley to raise his half-siblings while fulfilling the family quest of restoring their heritage mill. Now his art is attracting world-wide attention even more than his family’s restored mill, the only Christmas present he wants is Kayley back in his bed, and in his every day life. Permanently. A gift he knows Santa can’t bring him. But the Christmas spirit, Ryan remembers, is not in what he receives but what he gives and he plans to surprise Kayley this Christmas. And not just with an unusual sculpture he’s created.

Can love be wrapped in a present and left under a Christmas tree or will their dreams disappear up the chimney like Santa?

(I really wanted to put something in there about the Mountie getting her man, *wink wink*) It’s a working title, so that might change, and the heroine’s name may also change–I’m not sure about a Mountie named Kayley. I’m thinking I may change it to Megan. But squee, I get to put another title on my Coming Soon page!

Thanks Zee. Since I didn’t have to submit any pages in advance, now I’m being hit by the “OMG what if it’s not good enough” collywobbles.
