A while back I blogged about what a diverse group of readers visit my blog. Today’s author is no exception. Vivi Andrews hails all the way from Alaska. That explains why she writes about hot African animals – she needs something to keep her warm on those long, cold winter nights. She also has a book with the longest (and one of the funniest) titles I’ve ever seen: The Ghost Shrink, the Accidental Gigolo and the Poltergeist Accountant. Absolutely hilarious!

Anyway, here’s to Vivi Andrews who writes fantastic paranormals…

Thanks so much for having me as a guest during your Birthday Bash, Leah!

Hi, I’m Vivi Andrews and I’m a paranormal junkie… and I’m not alone. Paranormal romances are everywhere these days. Someone asked me recently why I thought shape-shifter romances were such a hot commodity. Why is it we can’t seem to get enough of werewolves and werecats? As a devoted reader of all things paranormal, here’s my verdict: We’re animals.

Homo sapiens may have a lot of civilized rules to keep ourselves in line, but we still have that animal instinct. There is a primitive, animalistic edge to our natures and shape-shifter stories revel in that very animalism. And as readers, we get to revel too. Sex is part of our base animal nature, so a man who can turn into an animal at will? He’s gotta be more in touch with that rawness, right? And how hot is that?

In shape-shifter romances we can immerse ourselves in the primitive forces of lust and possession. It gives us the chance to ignore all those irritating higher brain functions in favor of the animalistic urges lurking deep down inside us.

Pheromones and fate make for some pretty hot shifter lovin’. Rough. Fun. Instinctual. Uninhibited… what’s not to love?

Not to mention the fact that a man who can turn into a lion can pretty much keep you safe in any situation. Of course, the heroine in my latest novella, Serengeti Heat, can turn into a lioness, so she’s not exactly someone muggers should be messing with.

What do you think? What draws you to the shifters? Or, if you aren’t a fan, what sucks you into your favorite romance genre? Comment with your thoughts and be entered to win an ebook of my new release, Serengeti Heat, where my lion-shifters are at their most animalistic.

Vivi Andrews

Vivi is giving away an e-copy of her novella Serengeti Heat.

The fur’s about to fly…

A Sexy Shifter story.

Ava Minor is done being the good girl. As the smallest and weakest in a pride of shape-shifting lions where size and strength rule, she’s never had any choice but to toe the line. Now, with sexy, nomadic alpha Landon King winning control of the pride, she grabs her one chance to let her inner feline out to play.

Landon would rather focus on reforming the antiquated traditions of his new pride than taking a mate…until the rebellious Ava crosses his path. All his noble intentions go up in flames, incinerated by the heat she exudes—especially when he realizes she’s in heat.

Ava, knowing she isn’t mate material, is determined to revel in one wild night before she’s sent back to her place in the pride pecking order.

Except Landon has no intention of letting his daring, seductive lioness go…

Warning: This book contains sizzling heat, adult language, no-holds-barred cat fights, and hot shifter lovin’ with an alpha male who takes inspired leadership all the way to the bedroom.

(Here’s a link if you want to read an excerpt.)

Hmm, now shall I have you comment about today – okay, I said how scattered we are. So in today’s comment, tell us what country/state you’re commenting from. I’ll start. I’m from Ontario, Canada … and you’re from?

I like shape shifters for exactly the same reasons you stated. Because they call to that primal side of us. That we secretly crave walking that line between danger and passion. That the thought of taming something so wild is a huge attraction. And the idea of shape shifters being unknown and forbidden are also a lure.
I'm in the USA here. From Chicago, Illinois actually.

Shifters rock. Love strong alpha men that HAVE to have their mate. What's not to love? 🙂

  • July 11, 2009 at 5:04 am

So many possible thing with shifters. Strong and in control.

  • July 11, 2009 at 5:15 am

What an insightful blog. Animal attraction, chemistry, survival of the strongest – all rolled into a delightful subgenre of the Paranoramal Romance Genre with shapeshifters.

Serengeti Heat really rolls it all into a hot and spicy package, too.

    Monterey, Louisiana

Your comment about pheromones and fate creating uninhibited desires has got to be key.

  • July 11, 2009 at 5:52 am

Oooh, walking the line between danger and passion, I like that. And the strength… and the chemistry… so hard to pick just one thing to love! And so great to see everyone here. Shifter fans unite!

Thanks again, Leah, for letting me come play!

Hi Vivi – What you said about shifters seeming as if they'll be more in touch with their base animal nature? I think that's it totally!

  • July 11, 2009 at 6:35 am

I'm from West of Mars…. *grin*

No need to enter me (I should be saying this every day. I keep forgetting!). I'm dropping in to let you know that your daily Win a Book post has happened. This is fun! I wish it was going to last longer.

I am also from Ontario Canada. As an avid lover and reader of anything paranormal this would be a great addition. Also, since I want my ashes dumped over Africa when I pass ( it may be the only time I get there!!) this book has definitely peaked my curiosity!! Thanks for hosting the contest. Robin

    Great post, Viv!
I know write shifters because I've always been an nature/animal lover, and the whole idea of kinship, of expanding our own senses into another realm of existence is so magical. To see our world through new/fresh eyes.

  • July 11, 2009 at 7:55 am

Hi, Vivi! Great description of the shapeshifter lure:

'Pheromones and fate. Rough. Fun. Instinctual. Uninhibited… what's not to love?'

    I'm from California, United States.
I'm not sure exactly what it is about paranormal books or shifter stories if your more specific but I absolutely love them. I am always looking for new authors and books because I go through them sooo fast. Paranormal is definately my favorite. I love the mystery and the animal instincts that they follow. I believe in following your instinct.

  • July 11, 2009 at 8:55 am

I'm pretty new to reading paranormals but am enjoying the variety and range! Shifters are fun because it's sort of a best of both breeds kind of thing–the gorgeous animals with some of the better (hopefully) parts of humans. Also commenting from sometimes sunny California, USA 🙂

  • July 11, 2009 at 9:11 am

I love shifters. The animal instinct is just so… powerful.

I just wrote and sold my first one.

And I am in the armpit of the Appalachia Mountains in WV.

I'm in Potsdam, near Berlin, Germany.

I love shifter books, I agree with just about everyone here….it's the animal in us, the alpha strong male that attracts me too.

I love all things paranormal and shifters are high on my list.

    California girl checking in.

Big fan of shifter stories. Love the alpha characteristics, the intense connection between the couples, and the sense of family and loyalty that shine through in a well written story.

  • July 11, 2009 at 10:14 am

I do enjoy shifter stories. I like the concept of a character who is half-animal half-human and we get to see what happens when they transform. I'm in NY.

  • July 11, 2009 at 10:18 am

I love shifters and you story sounds great! I'm from the U.S. and am in Illinois.

  • July 11, 2009 at 11:19 am

I love shifters because…sounds like a test question answer. I read them because I like to escape and imagine worlds where "civilized" behavior doesn't always come into play. After all, we are supposed to be a civilized people and look how some of us act.
I'm in Saint Louis, Missouri-madhouse for the next five days (All Star mania has hit my lovely city)

  • July 11, 2009 at 11:30 am

MMMMmmmmm I would love and alpha shifter come and take me away to whatever cave he wants and be my protector…. I am another Ontario, Canada …. Southern Ont… 🙂

  • July 11, 2009 at 3:40 pm

I think you hit on the exact reason I am drawn to shifters, Vivi. I love that they can give in to their animalistic urges without worrying about anything since it's just part of their nature. It's really part of human nature as well, we're just really good at suppressing it. lol

As for me, I'm from the suburbs of Denver, Colorado in the US.

  • July 11, 2009 at 3:42 pm

  • July 11, 2009 at 8:45 pm
