Do you ever find that when you decide to start cleaning house (I’m talking decluttering, not just dusting and vacuuming) that partway through you’ve made more of a mess of the place than it was when you started? That’s my house right now.

Guitar Hero decided to move out of his room and down to the basement. So I declared dibs on his room. By Monday the room was fairly empty and ready to have the awful 1970s multi-level loop carpet ripped out and the walls painted a lovely neutral shade. (“What,” you ask? “Don’t you want your closet in that eye-popping fluorescent pink?” Um, no. Guitar Hero didn’t either, but even after I’d bought a quart of paint to match the green on the bedroom walls, he refused me entry and wouldn’t paint it himself either so here we are 9 years later and it’s still pink.) .

It’s empty no longer. You see, Guitar Hero “inherited” a queen-sized bedroom set from my parents but at the time he didn’t want the woman’s dresser with mirror. So he handed it off to his brother to use with the proviso that he’d take it with him when he and his girlfriend moved in together.  When Guitar Hero finally moved out, Curly’s room underwent a major upheaval too. Now, in addition to that big mirrored dresser, Curly had an old Ikea 5 drawer dresser, but he decided he needed more drawers and took possession of Guitar Hero’s old 5 drawer dresser that he’d had before he inherited his grandparents’ set. (Are you with me so far?) THEN on Tuesday, Curly bought a used queen-sized bedroom set himself. I guess he has so many clothes the mirrored dresser wasn’t enough because he decided he’d keep Guitar Hero’s old dresser too. (In addition to the mirrored dresser, his bed, his desk and a 5 high shelving unit for his books — all of this in an 8 x 8 bedroom!!!) He put GH’s old dresser in his closet (actually a fairly neat space saving idea considering he doesn’t hang up many of his clothes) and moved his Ikea dresser to Guitar Hero’s old room, mainly because we had no idea where to put it. A few other of his possessions may have made it into the room too.

So now Guitar Hero’s briefly-empty room is starting to fill up with stuff we don’t know where else to put. Did I mention that Curly removed the drawers to move it, and they’re sitting on the floor on the other side of the room. I figured I could put the drawers back in it, but it will have to be moved out of the room again this weekend when we tear up the carpet so what’s the point?

Oh and that piece of wallboard beneath the window? Those are two of the colors I was considering painting the room — I had thought of painting the wall with the window a brick red and having the rest of the walls that lighter color. Thank heavens for testers because OMG the red I’d chosen doesn’t resemble the paint chip at all. So that old saying that it’ll dry darker, sure wasn’t true in this case. For now I figure I’ll just have them all painted the lighter color and then accent it with burgundy drapes.

Which leads me to my struggle to find drapes — have you noticed how all drapes in the stores these days are full-length even when the windows aren’t. And how they all resemble shower curtains? There’s very little variance in curtains these days. Single panels, one color, no prints…boring!  I also don’t want a full-length curtain as they’ll end up draping over my desk.

Looks like I may have to drag out my sewing machine again…

As you know, I’m in the middle of a major decluttering too so I know exactly what you’re going through. And yeah, it definitely gets worse before it gets better. I haven’t seen the top of my dining room table since I began doing this. LOL
